Here is a huge specimen of Phacops rana rana from the famous Penn-Dixie Quarry in New York. This is one of the few Phacops that have ever been found from this site that is over two inches in length. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 1992. The trilobite is inflated and very nicely articulated. It is almost perfectly prone and exhibits wonderful detail. The eyes are beautifully preserved - the individual lenses are very easily seen. The coarse pustules on the glabella of the trilobite are quite evident. The dark grayish-black fossil contrasts nicely with the brownish-gray matrix. The bug is well centered on the semi-squared plate of shale. This extremely large Phacops rana rana is a highly collectible trilobite from the Devonian of New York.
