Here is a rare, outstretched example of Flexicalymene meeki from the Ordovician of Ohio. This specimen was found years ago in Monroe, Ohio, and just now prepared. This is not the more common Flexicalymene retrorsa, it is an uncommon F. meeki. This large trilobite is extremely inflated and beautifully articulated. The thick-shelled exoskeleton of the bug is very complete, and the free cheeks are intact and tightly attached. The dark brown trilobite contrasts beautifully with the blue-grey matrix. But the coolest feature of this fossil is the "growth" that runs the length of the trilobite! It could be a worm, a bryozoan, or something else, but there is definitely SOMETHING growing on the back of the bug This is a fantastic Flexicalymene meeki that just happens to be giving a ride to a strange bedfellow.
