This is the third rarest trilobite from the Middleport Quarry. It is a complete Illaenus insignis from the Rochester Shale. This is not a specimen of the much-more-common Bumastus ioxus, although they look similar. This specimen is complete, which is only one of a handful of this type ever found complete. The specimen is also nicely outstretched and well articulated, which is also extremely rare. The bug is well showcased in the center of a squared plate of shale. And this is a split pair fossil - the counterpart is also included (not pictured). This is a fine example of this hard-to-find Silurian trilobite from New York State.
