This is a gorgeous Ordovician trilobite. It is an extremely large Illaenus tauricornis from the Asery Level of Russia. Most Illaenus have rounded genal angles, and do not have genal spines. This type has long, hook-like genal spines on each side. This specimen showcases these free-standing spines in wonderful fashion. This outstretched trilobite is extremely 3-dimensional and well articulated. The natural caramel coloration of the bug is quite striking, and the detail is excellent. The widely-spaced eyes are easily seen, and the huge, bulbous glabella is quite spectacular. The trilobite displays beautifully on the large, sculpted plate of limestone. This is one of the most stunning examples of this spiny Illaenus that we have ever had.
